Praying for Contentment in a Discontent Society

We live in a society that teaches us that we should always want more. We’re constantly faced with a barrage of communication that tells us that we should want bigger and better versions of whatever we have. While there’s certainly nothing wrong with hard work and trying to make a better life for yourself and your family, it’s important that we embrace the idea of Godly contentment.

Throughout Scripture, we find examples of people who didn’t always get to enjoy the best circumstances. However, they chose to be content because of their relationship with God. Many of us struggle with the temptation to let discontentment creep in while we pursue “more.” Today, ask God to help you put away the fleshly desires of discontentment so you can fully replace those feelings with trust in your Father.

Pray These Verses
1 Timothy 6:6-9 (NIV)
But godliness with contentment is great gain. For we brought nothing into the world, and we can take nothing out of it. But if we have food and clothing, we will be content with that. Those who want to get rich fall into temptation and a trap and into many foolish and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction.

Philippians 4:11-13 (NIV)
I am not saying this because I am in need, for I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances. I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want. I can do all this through him who gives me strength.

Psalm 37:3-4 (NIV)
Trust in the Lord and do good; dwell in the land and enjoy safe pasture. Take delight in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart.

Pray This Prayer
Heavenly Father, when I look around at my life, I am overwhelmed by the blessings that You have given me. I know that I don’t always realize it, and I don’t always thank You the way I should, but I recognize that every good thing in my life is the result of Your love and faithfulness. Help me to be content with the things that I have. Help me to focus more on Your goodness than my own fleshly desires. Help me to find contentment in a culture teaches that I should never be satisfied. Help me to change the way that I think so I can embrace Your will. In Christ’s name, Amen.

Thank God
Heavenly Father, thank You for every good thing in my life. Thank You for the place where I live, the people who enrich my life, the food that I eat, and the clothes that I wear. I know that having those things is enough to be thankful. Most of all, thank You for saving me and loving me. In Christ’s name, Amen.
