Psalm 91:1-2 (NIV)
“Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the LORD, ‘He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.’”
Hurricane season can be a time of great anxiety and fear. The powerful winds, torrential rains, and destructive forces of nature remind us of our vulnerability in the face of these storms. Yet, as believers, we have a source of comfort and safety that surpasses any earthly shelter – the shelter of the Most High.
In Psalm 91, the psalmist reminds us of the assurance we have when we seek refuge in God. Just as we prepare our homes and make plans for safety during hurricane season, we should also prepare our hearts and turn to God as our ultimate refuge.
1. Dwelling in His Shelter: “Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty.” (Psalm 91:1)
During hurricane season, we secure our homes and seek shelter from the storm. Similarly, we are called to dwell in the shelter of the Most High. This means making a conscious choice to abide in God’s presence daily through prayer, reading His Word, and seeking His guidance. When we dwell in His shelter, we find rest and peace even in the midst of life’s storms.
2. Declaring His Trustworthiness: “I will say of the LORD, ‘He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.'” (Psalm 91:2)
Just as we trust the construction of our homes and the strength of our shelters during a hurricane, we are encouraged to trust in the Lord with unwavering faith. In times of uncertainty and danger, declare God as your refuge and fortress. Trust that He is with you, protecting you from harm.
3. God’s Promise of Protection: “He will cover you with his feathers, and under his wings you will find refuge; his faithfulness will be your shield and rampart.” (Psalm 91:4)
In the eye of a hurricane, there is a calm and peaceful place. Similarly, when we seek refuge in God, we find safety and peace. God promises to protect us, covering us with His love and faithfulness. When you are faced with the storms of life, remember that you are safe in His loving embrace.
4. Fear Not, for He is With You: “You will not fear the terror of night, nor the arrow that flies by day, nor the pestilence that stalks in the darkness, nor the plague that destroys at midday.” (Psalm 91:5-6)
Fear can be overwhelming during hurricane season, but as children of God, we are called not to fear. We can find courage in knowing that God is with us, even in the darkest and most challenging times. His presence is our assurance that we are never alone.
During this hurricane season and in every season of life, let us find refuge in the Most High. As we prepare for the physical storms, may we also prepare our hearts to seek shelter in God, trusting in His protection and finding peace in His presence. Remember, in Him, you are safe, and His faithfulness will see you through any storm that comes your way.
